BACKGROUND

Born of the planet Zenith, a pinnacle of culture and technology, Quintalian was always bound for greatness. It didn’t hurt that his family was also incredibly wealthy. From a young age, however, he was genuinely driven by a pursuit of knowledge. He was fascinated with the world around him and what made it tick. That annoying kid that asked questions like 'Why is the sky blue?' or 'Why doesn't beer freeze when it's in a cooler?' Yeah, that was him. This applied to people as well; everything and everyone was just a puzzle waiting to be solved in his eyes.

It was only natural that this great desire to understand led him down the path of a scientist. His family’s legacy also gave him a decided advantage in pursuing this field; his mother’s engineering expertise was what had caused Zenith’s breakthrough in universal travel. While he never could quite fill her shoes (according to her), he was still a remarkable man in his own right. His father meanwhile was just proud of his son so long as he was doing what made him happy. After scoring top marks in every tier of schooling, he grew up to be one of the most renowned minds that his universe had ever seen. During his adolescent years, the family’s legacy fell solely on his shoulders after his older brother’s untimely passing. He seemed to take this in stride, however, and to most, it looked like it just drove him to work that much harder. Who’s healthy coping mechanisms? We don’t know her. All his effort paid off in the end. The man took on the role of a professor of Xenobiology, with an emphasis in aquatic lifeforms, among Zenith Corporation’s ranks.

The Corporation was built to establish order throughout the galaxy and, before long, the known universe. They sought knowledge of every lifeform, of everything they could conceive. They wanted to observe and to learn all that was possible from everything out there known to them. This was, of course, a thinly veiled guise to use it to further their own advancements but they like to think of it - and advertise it, even! - as being inspired by other lifeforms rather than “stealing resources” or “eradicating useless species.” Good press is so important these days so it’s really how you word it!

PERSONALITY

While the professor tries to be charming and personable, it ends up coming across as just a little bit off-kilter. It’s a feeling in your gut telling you to stay away. Maybe it’s the way he smiles so big it’s more unsettling than reassuring; or, it could be how blithe some of his comments about others are without nary a thought. Either way, the man isn’t known for his bedside manner nor professionalism. It’s left many to wonder how he even got the position in the first place. Never mind all the scandals he’s had to date with inappropriate relationships with students. To that, he just says that he was and still is willing to do what it takes to secure his job and leaves it there.

Quintalian believes wholeheartedly in Zenith’s endeavor; which does, of course, include doing anything to obtain the information and resources they seek. While their missions sometimes fall into the morally grey areas, he doesn’t mind so long as it can be proven to be in the pursuit of Science. It’s for the greater good of them all! How can anyone think that what he’s done is wrong knowing he only does it to better his people and planet? Although oftentimes a flimsy justification for the atrocities he’s committed, it’s one he holds steadfast to.

As mentioned, he was a little off to anyone that encountered him. Most would have said that he was still endearing though. A bit self-centered and big-headed but not completely intolerable or unheard of for men in his field. At least, that's what people thought until he spliced himself with an alien octopus-like creature to try and figure out... something. Most of his colleagues still aren't sure exactly what. Resiliency to a disease he contracted, possibly? The details of all that are… iffy, to put it kindly. However, it definitely shifted their views on Quintalian and he began to build a more infamous reputation throughout Zenith and his known universe. He didn't seem to mind much and still doesn't. In fact, he doesn't seem to care at all for other people or what they think of him. All he cares about nowadays is his research and where it will take him.

Due to his upbringing and being so focused on studies, he didn’t learn proper or healthy emotional regulation. In case that, uh, wasn’t obvious yet. He has a lot of feelings! So many, of the feelings. And his weakness is that for as much of an intellectual as he is, he gives in to the whims of his heart fast as a snap. Unsurprisingly, this hasn’t gone well for him. When it doesn’t go well for him, it doesn’t go well for anyone else either. That’s the downfall to an unhinged intensity and being in a position of power that’s so easily abused. He’s been known to take out his heartache and aggression on others, making up punishments for them that are grueling or overly harsh to make himself feel better. Or, on the other hand, he turns extremely saccharine and sappy to try and win people over again. He convinces them that he’s changed (he hasn’t) and that things will be different going forward (they won’t).

One of the most noticeable changes in his aforementioned splice, however, is actually something people can’t see and didn’t help his already unstable emotions. When he suddenly gained eight new limbs, his brain couldn't handle the sensory overload. With time and physical therapy, he had thought this would be corrected but instead, it over-corrected in the opposite direction. He now feels almost no physical sensation. Because of this, he seeks out and seems to enjoy extreme pain, pleasure, and so on. It appears to be one of the only ways he can feel anymore. Unfortunately, alongside his strong emotions, it just makes him an especially traumatizing nightmare who dresses himself up like a daydream.

Quintalian tends to be hot and cold to extremes that leave most people’s heads spinning and he also doesn’t seem to care what hurt he causes for it. He’s a man to engage with at one’s own discretion, but unfortunately, anyone might become involved with him whether they like or not if he thinks they can be of use to him somehow.

APPEARANCE

Since the splice, the professor still looks fairly normal at first glance aside from the slight, slimy sheen to his skin. His body fusing with the alien DNA combined their anatomy in strange ways; he developed mucous-filled membranes that sink inward, like pockets, into his back that house tentacles within them. They are not aligned neatly and instead seemingly randomly placed purple splotches on his skin. While easily concealed under his clothes, it does cause quite a surprise when a tentacle sometimes slithers out from under his long-sleeved lab coat.

They are protected by a tougher outer covering but can still be reached into with minimal effort. It feels strange, but he isn't opposed to the sensation. He might actually find it quite interesting. This skin retracts when flexed (like a muscle) to allow those aforementioned tentacles to be used at will. He controls these like one would regular appendages, with semi-conscious thought and effort. The tentacles are prehensile, able to change color at will, and also have a bioluminescent dashed pattern along them.
